Sodium alginate from seaweed may help with weight loss

sodium alginate, obesity

New research from Denmark said the weight loss potential resulting from dietary supplement of sodium alginate, a seaweed fiber.

Research has previously shown that sodium alginate helps burn excess fat. Scientists at the University of Copenhagen, Department of nutrition have found that, if taken daily before meals, the compound can be effective at helping some overweight people achieve their weight loss goals.

Sodium alginate is a chemical extracted from the cell walls of algae and looks like an eraser. It is used both in food than in the pharmaceutical field

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study found that among the 96 people generally healthy but obese women who participated in the trial, those who received sodium alginate every day, before each meal for three months, they got a substantial loss of pesorispetto to people who took the supplement.

Participants, between 20 and 55 years, were divided into two groups. The first group was assigned to receive sodium alginate powder mixed with liquid. The other group received a placebo powder, not sodium alginate.

Neither the participants nor facilitators knew they were given solutions to individuals, which means that the study was conducted using two weights and two blind. All participants drank their assigned solutions dissolved in two cups of water half an hour before each meal, and were also said to usually reduce their total calories during the trial period of three months.

At the conclusion of the study, the treatment group showed a weight loss of 36 percent more than in the placebo group, suggesting that sodium alginate can help curb appetite and also help you to burn calories.

Sodium alginate can also be helpful in adjusting the energy

The research team also discovered, through another double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, that sodium alginate seems to help total energy intake, increasing the feeling of “fullness” and regular food consumption patterns.

“These findings suggest that supplementation of sodium alginate, in addition to energy restriction, may improve weight loss in obese individuals who complete a minimum of 12 weeks of treatment,” says Dr. Astrup.

A group of University of Newcastle University in Britain also argues that the addition of seaweed alginates-rich foods such as bread, biscuits, yoghurt … may reduce the absorption of fats from the intestine of 75%. Dr Iain Brownlee, author of the study, believes that the addition of alginates to food, does not change their flavor and taste.

The researchers say it is necessary to launch clinical trials to figure out what is the mechanism of absorption of alginates. A goal may be the m adding alginates to food, to help reduce obesity. There is another aspect, the presence of alginate fiber promotes the absorption by the intestine.

Contraindications

Similar to carrageenan, seaweed-based food additive, commonly used to thicken dairy, nut, ice cream and other processed foods, can have side effects. It is important to note that some people react negatively to these and other compounds of garcinia cambogia extract to buy algae and that in some people can cause bloating and stomach pains. Co-administration with other drugs: sodium alginate after two hours after oral administration of other drugs because it may reduce gastrointestinal absorption.
